Mayhem and Mirth on Mentors
(August 23, 2001)… Lights, camera, cream pie! The slapstick comedy of The Keystone Cops lives again as Mark McKinney (Kids the Hall, Saturday Night Live) recreates the madcap genius of silent movie mogul, Mack Sennett in the this week’s Mentors. Returning behind the lens is director Nicholas Kendall (Caitlin’s Way, The New Adamms Family) for another hilarious episode. Produced by Anaïd Productions and Minds Eye Entertainment, Mentors is currently filming 13 episodes in and around Edmonton for its third season.
Mentors follows the adventures of young brother and sister team, Simon and Crystal Cates, after their cousin, Oliver, bestows his invention, VisiCron, to them. Using this ingenious computer program, Simon and Crystal zap historical figures into their 21st Century lives to help them solve a particular challenge they’ve encountered. Along the way, the mentors reveal surprising, little-known facts about themselves, adding new hues to their already colourful lives.
In this week’s episode, Silent Movie, Simon is a finalist in a city wide filmmaking contest but faces tough competition from the wealthy classmate Jes Haven, who has Hollywood connections. Mindful of his own limited resources, Simon decides that a silent slapstick film is the best (and cheapest!) route to go and calls upon the master of the genre, Mack Sennett (Mark McKinney). The cigar-chomping, deal-making Sennett shows Simon that big stars and bankrolls don’t guarantee success but telling a good story with a truly unique voice will win over audiences and critics every time.
“Our Canadian comedy lineage is perfectly illustrated in this episode of Mentors by the fact that Mack Sennett—a revered icon from the era of the Hollywood silent films-- was born in Danville, Quebec,” says producer, Josh Miller. “He will be portrayed by innovative Canadian comedy troupe Kids in the Hall alumnus Mark McKinney, who also starred on Saturday Night live, a series created by another famous Canadian comedy icon, Lorne Michaels.”
Mentors was created by Josh Miller of Minds Eye Entertainment who is producing the series with Margaret Mardirossian of Anaïd Productions with Kevin DeWalt of Minds Eye Entertainment as Executive Producer. The series features Stevie Mitchell (Snow Day, Real Kids – Real Adventures) as Simon, Samantha Krutzfeldt (Orange Seed Myth & Other Lies Mothers Tell) as his sister Crystal, Brian Martell (Texas Rangers) as their father Norm Cates and Jane Sowerby (The Young Person’s Guide To Becoming a Rock Star) as their mother, Peggy.
